Hard bread soaked overnight and boiled until soft. Served with salt fish and scrunchions, it becomes fish and brewis.
Brewis
Where the word comes from
The Dictionary of Newfoundland English defines brewis first as sea biscuit or hard bread soaked and boiled. Its supplement notes the word goes back much further in English, and quotes Robinson Crusoe (1719) describing biscuit softened in meat broth that the sailors called brewes.
