A small, tart red berry picked on the barrens in the fall. Elsewhere it goes by lingonberry or mountain cranberry.

Where the word comes from
The Dictionary of Newfoundland English describes it as a low creeping plant with small tart red berries harvested on the barrens in autumn, the mountain cranberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea). Its earliest example is from 1770.
